Boards can be made from fallen trees (aka tree trunks). They can also be made from logs. You need an axe to do it, preferably a Splitting Axe. Each tree trunk converts into 20 boards.

Boards also make great items to trade for food at villages especially if you do not have a rod and your traps are empty.
